Howel Dovetail Saw by Anthony Waldis

This small open handled dovetail saw dates from about 1800 and was made by the London maker Joseph Howel.

The plate is 5 and 7/8 inches long and 1 inch deep with a thickness of 0.016 inch. The plate has a split mid way which renders the saw unusable. There are 21 PPI with a fleam of 25 degrees and rake of 15 degrees.

The single stamp is placed centrally on the brass back. The beech handle is secured by two flat brass screws with split nuts.

Such was Howel’s reputation that his successor J.V Hill stamped his saws ‘J V Hill late Howel’.
