Benjamin and Henry Slater - London, UK

Henry Slater: London, 1868 - 1909 by Jim Hendricks

1 of 3

Henry Slater and his son Benjamin were prolific cast iron, body infill plane makers under their name and as a supplier to other makers.

Here are three planes that show a differences in design and style.

Three generations of cast infill planes, made with Slater's castings.

As the form changed, the little nuances first appeared such as cutouts to allow the easier removal of shavings and ultimately to the development of the lever cap.

Heavy tallow staining on the left plane could be an evidence of pre-electric lighting in the shop. Tallow candle illumination was the common method of artificial lighting of the period.

Slight, evolutionary changes over time.

Changes in shavings escapement profile.
