Richard Arnold on 18th Century English Tools

18th Century Mortising Chisels by Richard Arnold 1 of 2

I had a great day out at the David Stanley auction in February and picked up a few interesting items.

One of the dealers had saved these chisels for me as he knew I would appreciate them.

The top two are something really special. They have the makers mark of 18th century edge tool maker, Robert Moore of Birmingham.

It's difficult to put a date to these but the mark is usually found on planes dating before 1750. I have many plane irons by this maker, but I have never found a chisel by him.

The top chisel in the picture is possibly the biggest mortice chisel I have ever seen. The blade is about 9" long.
