Richard Arnold on 18th Century English Tools

18th Century Mortising Chisels by Richard Arnold 2 of 2

Both chisels have another mark on their reverse side. It simply reads ER in a zigzag border.

This seems to be a sophisticated mark for an owners stamp, so it's perhaps a retailers stamp?

The bottom chisel is not so old, but has a beautiful boxwood handle so I couldn't resist.

The maker is Francis Pearson of of Birmingham, 1824 -1860 - a Toolmaker.
