Richard Arnold on 18th Century English Tools

Recreating a Robert Wooding's Panel Raiser by Richard Arnold 1 of 2

Collecting old tools is something Iím sure we all enjoy, but for myself, Iím always fascinated by how they may have been used, and also how well they performed.

Many old tools can be restored and used, but sometimes they are either badly damaged, or of such historical importance that it would be inappropriate to use them.

This panel plane by Robert Wooding is a good example. It is a very early specimen of this maker's work.

The stepped round topped wedge is a very early feature and possibly an English interpretation of the Dutch style of wedges of this period.

The iron is also very early and made by William Crosby of Birmingham.
